Terms of Insurance: AUTO LIABILITY INSURANCE

We continue our series on “Terms of Insurance”.  Today, Auto Liability Insurance.  It is my hope this is either great new material or a refresher of what you already know about this where you are at a liability risk with auto insurance.

Auto liability insurance is a type of car insurance that covers the costs of injuries and damages to other people and their property that you cause in an accident. It is required by law in most states to drive legally. Auto liability insurance has two components: bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

  • Bodily injury liability pays for the medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other costs of the people you injure in an accident.
  • Property damage liability pays for the repair or replacement of the vehicles, buildings, fences, or other property that you damage in an accident.

Auto liability insurance does not cover your own injuries or damages to your own property. You need other types of coverage, such as collision, comprehensive, medical payments, or personal injury protection for that.

The amount of auto liability insurance you need depends on your state’s minimum requirements and your personal financial situation. You can use a coverage calculator to get a recommendation based on your needs. You may also want to consider an umbrella policy that provides additional coverage for more serious accidents and lawsuits.  We can furnish you that coverage here at Benton White Insurance.
