The Fourth of July is one of my favorite times of year.
It’s a chance to slow down, spend time with family and friends, fire up the grill, watch the fireworks, and enjoy everything that makes summer in Tennessee special.
As someone who works in insurance every day, I also know it’s one of the busiest weekends of the year for accidents and insurance claims. Most of them are completely preventable with just a little extra attention.
So before the celebrations begin, I wanted to wish you a safe and happy Independence Day and share a few reminders that could help keep your holiday memorable for the right reasons.
Keep an Eye on the Grill
Backyard cookouts are a Fourth of July tradition, but grills are also one of the leading causes of holiday home fires.
A few simple reminders:
- Keep your grill several feet away from your home, deck railings, and anything flammable.
- Never leave a hot grill unattended.
- Make sure propane connections are secure before lighting.
- Keep children and pets away from the cooking area.
Be Careful with Fireworks
Fireworks are exciting, but they can cause serious injuries and property damage in just a few seconds.
If you’re using consumer fireworks:
- Follow all local laws and safety instructions.
- Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
- Never relight a firework that doesn’t go off.
- Keep spectators at a safe distance.
Professional fireworks displays are always the safest option if one is available in your area.
Drive a Little More Carefully
The roads are often much busier over the holiday weekend.
Whether you’re traveling across town or across the state:
- Give yourself extra time.
- Avoid distracted driving.
- Never drive under the influence.
- Expect heavier traffic after fireworks events.
Sometimes simply slowing down a little can make all the difference.
Keep Valuables Out of Sight
If you’re headed to a park, lake, or community celebration, remember that thieves know vehicles are often left unattended.
Before you leave your car:
- Lock your doors.
- Roll up your windows.
- Keep purses, wallets, electronics, and firearms out of sight.
- Take your keys with you.
A few seconds of preparation can prevent a frustrating end to an otherwise great day.
Pool Safety Matters
If you’re hosting family or friends around the pool:
- Never leave children unattended near the water.
- Keep rescue equipment nearby.
- Make sure gates and pool barriers are secured.
- Avoid running or roughhousing around wet surfaces.
Many homeowners don’t realize that injuries around pools can also create liability issues, making supervision especially important.
Protect Your Home While You’re Away
If you’re traveling for the weekend:
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Set interior lights on timers if possible.
- Pause mail or ask a neighbor to collect it.
- Double-check that garage doors are closed.
Small steps like these can help your home look occupied while you’re enjoying your trip.
