AI Is Changing Insurance, But Not How We Take Care of You

AI is reshaping just about every industry right now. Banking, healthcare, retail, logistics, and insurance is no different. The way policies get priced, claims get processed, and risk gets evaluated has changed more in the last three years than in the twenty before it.

We want to be straight with you about where we stand on all of it.

Benton White Insurance has always worked for the client. Not the carrier, not the algorithm, the client. That’s how this agency was built, it’s how we operate today, and it isn’t changing because the technology around us is.

We’ll gladly use tools that genuinely make things better for you: faster quotes, quicker claim payments, less paperwork to chase down. We’re not afraid of progress, and we’re not going to make you fax us something just because that’s how it’s always been done.

But we are never going to hand you off to a chatbot when your house has water damage. We’re never going to let an algorithm be the last word on your coverage. And we’re never going to stop answering the phone with a real voice that knows your name.

Technology changes. How we treat you doesn’t.

Here’s an honest look at what’s actually happening in the industry, what it means for your policy, and where a human being still makes all the difference.

The Short Version

  • AI now touches underwriting, pricing, claims, and fraud detection at most major carriers
  • The upside is real: faster claims, faster quotes, less paperwork
  • The risk is real too: automated decisions made about your property without a human ever looking at it
  • Regulators are actively responding, and more than half the states have adopted AI governance guidance for insurers
  • What AI still can’t do is advocate for you, and that part of our job hasn’t changed at all

Where AI Has Already Taken Over

Underwriting and Pricing

For decades, your premium was largely driven by broad averages: your ZIP code, your home’s age, your claims history. That’s been replaced by property-level risk scoring.

Carriers now assess your specific house using aggregated data and aerial or satellite imagery. Roof condition, tree overhang, debris, outbuildings, pool enclosures, things that used to go unnoticed between inspections are now visible from above and factored into your rate.

The same shift hit auto. Telematics programs score your actual driving (braking, acceleration, time of day, mileage) rather than relying on demographic proxies.

Claims Processing

This is where AI has produced the clearest consumer win, and we’ll take it. Simple, well-documented claims that used to take weeks can now be triaged, validated, and approved dramatically faster. Photo-based damage assessment, automated intake, and instant document handling have cut cycle times substantially across the industry.

If you’ve ever filed a straightforward glass claim and had it resolved same-day, that’s technology working in your favor. We’re all for it.

Fraud Detection

AI pattern recognition catches fraudulent claims at rates human reviewers can’t match. That’s not just good for carriers. Fraud costs get baked into everybody’s premium, so catching it helps keep rates down for honest policyholders like you.

Quoting and Service

Instant quotes, 24/7 chatbots, automated document generation. Convenient for simple questions. Frustrating the moment your question isn’t simple, which, in insurance, is most of the time.

The Part That Should Concern You

Here’s where we’ll be blunt, because you deserve a straight answer from your agent rather than industry cheerleading.

Decisions Made Without a Human Looking

The scenario is increasingly common. A homeowner receives a non-renewal notice. The reason isn’t an inspector’s visit. It’s an algorithm that reviewed aerial imagery and flagged the property for a deteriorated roof, excessive vegetation, or some other condition.

Sometimes the algorithm is right. Sometimes it isn’t. State regulators have investigated consumer complaints where the images insurers relied on didn’t actually demonstrate the damage claimed. One state department found the aerial images in question didn’t definitively show material roof degradation at all.

Picture a stain that’s actually a shadow. A “damaged” roof that was replaced six months after the photo was taken. A pool with a fence the image angle doesn’t show.

You Often Don’t Know It Happened

Unless someone tells you the decision came from imagery analysis, you may never know what to dispute, or that you had grounds to dispute it at all. That’s precisely the kind of thing we consider our job to catch.

Regulators Are Responding

The good news is that this isn’t going unchecked. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners issued a model bulletin requiring insurers to govern their AI systems: monitoring outcomes, testing for bias, validating data quality, overseeing third-party vendors, and remaining accountable for AI they didn’t build themselves. More than half the states have adopted it.

Several states have gone further with rules specific to aerial imagery, generally requiring that:

  • Imagery can’t be the sole basis for a non-renewal, especially for cosmetic conditions
  • Images must be recent, with some states setting hard limits like 12 or 15 months
  • Insurers must provide the actual image with the notice
  • Homeowners get an appeal process and a chance to show the condition was fixed

Regulators are also piloting a tool that lets them audit carriers’ AI systems directly, with broader adoption expected before year-end.

Those protections are real. But they only help if someone knows they exist and pushes the issue on your behalf. That’s us.

Why a Real Agent Matters More Now, Not Less

Here’s the thing most of the coverage about AI misses. These systems optimize for the carrier’s objectives, not yours. That’s not a conspiracy, it’s simply what the software was built to do. Which makes the question of who’s working on your side more important than it’s ever been.

This is the part of our business that hasn’t changed and won’t.

Someone Has to Push Back

When an algorithm makes a bad call, a chatbot won’t overturn it. A licensed agent who knows the carrier’s underwriting team, knows the appeal process, and knows your property can get the image pulled, the error documented, and the decision reviewed.

That’s the kind of fight we take on for our clients, and it’s not one a website will take on for you.

AI Answers the Question You Asked, Not the One You Should Have Asked

An online quote tool gives you a price for exactly what you selected. It won’t tell you your dwelling limit hasn’t kept pace with construction costs. It won’t flag that you dropped uninsured motorist coverage three renewals ago. It won’t notice you added a pool, a teen driver, and a boat since the policy was written.

Cheapest-quote algorithms optimize for price. We optimize for whether you’re actually covered when something goes wrong. Those are very different jobs.

Judgment Calls Aren’t Automatable

Should you file this claim or pay out of pocket? Does a $2,500 deductible make sense for your savings situation? Is this carrier’s exclusion going to matter for your specific property?

Those answers depend on your finances, your family, and your risk tolerance, not on a model trained on the general population. Answering them requires knowing you, which is the whole point of having an agent.

Most People Don’t Actually Want a Bot Handling This

Consumer research backs up what we hear every day. People are comfortable using AI to check a status or get a quick answer, but far fewer want an algorithm handling their claim. When something has gone wrong at your house or on the road, you want a person who knows your name.

That’s exactly what you get when you call us.

Independence Compounds the Advantage

We’re an independent insurance agency, which means we’re not locked into any one company’s algorithm. We represent several carriers, including Auto-Owners Insurance, Travelers Insurance, Kemper Preferred Insurance, and Progressive Insurance, and if none of those fits your situation, we have other resources.

When one carrier’s model decides it doesn’t like your roof, we have somewhere else to go. A captive agent doesn’t. A website definitely doesn’t.

Our goal is the same as it’s always been: the best coverage at the most affordable price. 98% of the people we have the privilege of quoting get exactly that.

What You Should Actually Do About This

  • Keep your property’s condition documented. Photograph your roof after a replacement or repair, and keep the contractor’s invoice. If an algorithm flags you later, dated proof is how you win that argument.
  • Keep up with maintenance. Trim overhanging limbs, clear debris, address visible wear. What’s visible from above now affects your pricing.
  • Don’t ignore a non-renewal notice. You often have more recourse than you think, and the window to use it is short. Call us the day it arrives.
  • Ask what’s driving your rate. You’re entitled to understand why your premium changed. We’ll find out for you.
  • Review your policy annually with a person. Algorithms don’t know you got married, bought a boat, or paid off the car.

And Before You File Any Claim, Call Us

Call us at 615.377.1212 before you file. This matters more in an automated environment, not less. How a loss is reported and documented at the very beginning shapes how it’s triaged, scored, and routed from there, and once it’s in the system, it’s much harder to redirect.

We’ll look at your actual coverage, your deductible, and the actual damage, and tell you straight whether filing makes sense and how to document it properly. That conversation saves our clients money and time, almost every time.

Want a Second Set of Eyes on Your Coverage?

Take five minutes and fill out our quick-start form and we can produce a quote within 24 hours, often sooner. Or send your current declarations pages to quote@BentonWhite.com, text us at 615.377.1212, or book a time to talk.

We’ll tell you where your coverage is thinner than you realize, where you’re paying for something you don’t need, and what we can do across our carriers. If your current policy is solid, we’ll tell you that too, because that’s the kind of answer you should expect from people who work for you.

The Bottom Line

AI has made parts of insurance faster and better, and we’ll keep adopting whatever genuinely serves our clients. We’re not against progress. We’re against anyone mistaking it for a replacement for relationship.

Technology is a tool. It is not an advocate. When an automated decision is wrong, when the coverage question is really about your life rather than your data, when something has gone wrong and you need someone in your corner, that still takes a person who knows you.

That’s been the Benton White way since day one, and no amount of new technology is going to change it.

When you call us, a real person answers. Someone who knows your name, knows your policy, and will tell you the truth about what’s going on.

This article is general information intended to help you understand how insurers use technology. Coverage, limits, exclusions, underwriting practices, and consumer protections vary by policy, carrier, and state. Your policy documents and declarations page govern your actual coverage.
