It seems like we are seeing more apartment fires lately. It’s always hard to see tenants run for their lives and watch as their personal belongings are destroyed by fire – that in most cases – they never caused. A trend we have been seeing here at the agency over the last year is apartment leasing offices are requiring, as a part of the lease, that the new tenant purchase apartment renters insurance before they can move in. The premise of the leasing agency is that the tenant would be covered for liability (usually a minimum of $100,000) so that the complex will be protected in the event of liability exposure from the tenant. In putting that policy together, there is a minimum amount of personal property coverage (usually $10,000 – $15,000) that comes with the liability policy. We have ALWAYS thought this was important and unfortunately, we’ve seen some of our insurance policyholders lose everything because they never purchased renters insurance to cover their loss! Tragic!
Newschannel 5 had a story this week on just this issue. Here’s the informative video.
