As we all know, it’s that time of the year for the flu season and this year, it appears to be rampant across our area and our country. I know of folks that have had Type A, then Type B and then Strep within a 2-week period! ARGH!
You will likely find yourself surrounded by others coughing, sniffling and sneezing. There are simple things to do – some of our Mom’s taught us, other things we can remember to do to better prevent the flu from capturing us:
Follow these 5 tips for protecting yourself against the flu.
- Although controversial to many, getting a flu vaccination is your best defense according to the medical community. If you didn’t get your flu shot at the beginning of flu season, it’s still useful to get vaccinated now. Flu season can run as late as May.
- Keep your distance – Droplets containing the flu virus can spread up to six feet through the air, according to the CDC.
- Wash your hands – Wash regularly with soap and water, scrubbing for a minimum of 20 seconds, on the backs of hands, palms, fingers and under the nails.
- Disinfect surfaces – The flu virus can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so disinfecting heavily-trafficked areas such as doorknobs, counters, bathrooms, remotes and keyboards can help prevent the spread of bugs.
- Adopt healthy habits – Eating a nutritious diet, being physically active, managing stress and getting adequate sleep can help maintain overall health, and they may also boost your immunity.
